Transiting Light — A musical journey in five movements

ORCHESTRA · FIVE MOVEMENTS · APPROX. 20 MINUTES

Movement.
Expectation.
Arrival.

From Paris to Algeciras, a railway journey becomes a reflection on life, change and arrival. Light is the thread that passes through it all.

Recurring musical ideas take on new forms, carried by modal colour and changing orchestral textures. The work asks how music can create a sense of arrival without a conventional tonal resolution.

Five stations.

Open a movement to follow the journey.

IParis Gare du Nord

The departure point of the five-movement cycle. Recurring motifs begin a journey of transformation, with the railway acting as a metaphor for the passage through life.

IIBarcelona Sants

The second station in the journey from Paris towards southern Spain. Part of a continuous musical narrative, it carries the work forward through changing modal and motivic processes.

IIIMadrid Atocha

At the centre of the route, Madrid is the third of the five stations. The cycle’s concern with expectation, change and arrival continues through the contrasting character of each movement.

IVGranada Andaluces

Andalusian harmonic ideas meet a Phrygian environment. A descending cadence, pedals and the resonance of fourths and fifths give this movement its distinctive musical character.

VAlgeciras The final station

The journey reaches its final station. An accumulative process shapes the closing movement, bringing the cycle’s exploration of continuity and transformation towards its conclusion.

“A genuinely interesting
breadth of inspiration.”

INFO

Innovation
through reflection.

I’m Jose Martin, a contemporary classical composer, writer and interviewer, based in London.

I’m drawn to the orchestra: its colours, its contrasts and its capacity to hold an unfolding narrative.

Today, my writing brings together lyricism, modal and tonal language, recurring motifs and orchestral colour. I’m interested in how a familiar idea can change, how expectation can be interrupted and how music can find its own sense of arrival.

Alongside composing, I explore music and creative life through writing, listening projects and conversations on my YouTube channel.
